The movie ‘Psycho’ seems to be making a resurgence lately. Not only is the film ‘Hitchcock‘ set around the making of the film, A&E has been working on a prequel series regarding the creepy Norman Bates called ‘Bates Motel.’ From the teasers released by the network today, there is some pretty twisted stuff going on at the motel.
The teasers have an “American Horror Story’ vibe to them showing glimpses of disturbing images like someone being chained to a sink and dangling legs burning in the forefront of an idyllic lakeside view.
If you’re not familiar with the concept of the series, ‘Bates Motel’ serves as a contemporary prequel to ‘Psycho’ and promises to show how the teenaged Norman Bates’ (Freddie Highmore) relationship with his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), and her boyfriend helped shape him to become the most famous crazy serial killer of all. Creator and showrunner of the series Calton Cuse (‘Lost’) has indicated that the series won’t be limited to what happens inside the motel, but will also focus on the town itself. “’There are a lot of secrets that lurk beneath this bucolic veneer,” he says.
The first episode is called ‘First You Dream, Then You Die’ and will cover the very beginnings of when Norma buys the motel hoping to seek a fresh start with her “handsome and shy” teenage son, Norman.
As ‘Psycho’ is one of my favorite movies (and no, I don’t count the Vince Vaughn remake!), I’m anxious to see how this series plays. Sometimes the psychological damage to a character is much scarier than the horror of their deeds, don’t you think?
While there is not an exact date as to when the series will premiere on A&E, it is set to air sometime next year. Check out the teasers and let me know if you’ll be watching ‘Bates Motel.’
