It’s official! Vin Diesel’s labor of love movie sequel to ‘Chronicles of Riddick’ has been officially given an “R” rating from the Motion Pictures Association of America (otherwise known as the MPAA).

A few months back, Diesel has indicated on his Facebook page that Universal had agreed that the film would go back to its R rated roots. “Though Hollywood likes their PG Ratings,” he had written, “the next chapter in the ‘COR’ series was always envisioned as an R rating, like ‘Pitch Black.”

A movie garners an R rating if it contains “strong violence, language and some sexual content/nudity” and while the violence and language is not a surprise, does the sexual content/nudity imply there may be a little “something” for Riddick?

The sequel has had to overcome many obstacles to get made including multiple production delays and even a production shut down. At one point, Diesel even took a pay cut in order for the film to be produced in the manner both he and writer/director David Twohy envisioned.

But it looks like all their sacrifices have paid off as obtaining an R rating for the film is seen as step forward. Fans thoroughly enjoyed the gritty R rated ‘Pitch Black’ but balked at the more mainstream PG-13 ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ so continuing the saga with  the restricted rating is a plus.

Currently, Universal has not given a release date (or an official title) for the sequel, but Diesel is optimistic that it will be sometime in the early part of next year. With an official rating already attached to the film, hopefully an official trailer will soon follow.

While we wait for that announcement, here’s the official synopsis for the film:

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

‘Riddick’ (unofficial title) stars Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff , Bokeem Woodbine, Jordi Molla, Dave Bautista, Raoul Trujillo, and Nolan Gerard Funk.
