ABC will be getting into the artificial intelligence arena as Shonda Rhimes and her producing partner, Betsy Beers, have teamed up with David DiGilio to develop a sci-fi drama/thriller for ABC titled ‘Mila 2.0.’

The series is based on the yet to be released novel by Debra Driza of the same name and centers on a teenage girl named Mila (short for Mobile Intel Life-like Android)  who finds out she is an AI experiment. When her scientist mother discovers she is developing human emotions, she decides to kidnap her and go on the run.

Here’s an official synopsis of the novel from Goodreads:

Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past —that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do. Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.

‘Mila 2.0’ isn’t set to be published until March of next year but is already gaining attention. The book will be the first of a planned trilogy and is described as having a ‘Bourne Identity’ meets ‘I am Number Four’ type of feel.

DiGilio will be handling script duties along with executive producing with Rhimes and Beer. His credits include creating the 2007 ABC series ‘Traveler’ which starred Matt Bomer and he penned the sequel to Disney’s ‘Tron: Legacy.’

Since the project is in the development stage, no other information has been released but expect to see the series next season if it gets a green light by ABC execs.
