Joss Whedon’s been saying for a while that at least one or two new characters would be popping up in ‘Avengers 2’, and he’s expressed interest in bringing out some lady members of the team, so the latest rumor makes plenty of sense. According to British tabloid The Daily Mail (via Blastr), the mighty Ms. Marvel will be making her big screen debut in the follow-up to the blockbuster hit ‘The Avengers’ and Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are neck and neck for the role.

Although the source of this news isn’t 100% reliable, these casting choices make a lot of sense. Marvel has tried to lock down Blunt before when they were casting Black Widow and Peggy Carter, roles who ultimately went to Scarlett Johansson and Hayley Atwell respectively. Wilson, while not as established as her competition, is a star on the rise. While currently building some buzz in BBC’s ‘Luther’ alongside ‘Thor’ co-star Idris Elba, she also has big films coming up like ‘Anna Karenina’, ‘The Lone Ranger’, and ‘Saving Mr. Banks’.

And bringing in Carol Danvers is almost a no brainer. She’s currently in the spotlight in the Marvel Universe as she’s recently taken up the mantle of Captain Marvel and will be a “vice-captain” of Jonathan Hickman’s team of Avengers for Marvel NOW. Ms. Marvel is a great character ripe with great qualities that Joss Whedon can bring to life perfectly, so this is one rumor that I hope comes true.

‘Avengers 2’ is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2015.
