In case you haven’t heard the excellent news, Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct the follow up to his hugely successful and extremely awesome Marvel Studios film ‘The Avengers’ in 2015. He’s also signed on to help shape Phase Two and develop a live action television series for ABC set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So now that we’ve got him, what does he plan to do?

According to Blastr, the ‘Buffy’, ‘Firefly’, and ‘Dollhouse’ creator is “hoping for a somewhat smaller-scale film this time around, though he promises a big villain and a big threat yet again.” He also says that there will be “at least one new character” joining Nick Fury’s team of extraordinary individuals.

First, it’s interesting that Whedon wants to make a smaller-scale Avengers movie after introducing Thanos at the end of the first film. I know much of those repercussions are likely to be seen in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, but I don’t think that’ll stop the Mad Titan from getting a piece of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. I’m not really sure how he plans to handle this battle of epic proportions with a small-scale film.

Now, the director is teasing at least one new character, so the minds of fans are probably running rampant thinking about who the character will be. There are many potential new teammates that could pop up, but the report specifically singles out one heroine: The Wasp.

The report says that Whedon originally wanted Janet Van Dyne in the first movie, but ran out of room. Seeing as Janet is a founding Avenger, I too would have liked to see her in the film, but we can’t always get what we want. However, with Ant-Man getting his own movie potentially in 2014 courtesy of Edgar Wright, it’s extremely likely that we’ll see both Ant-Man and The Wasp in some capacity in ‘The Avengers 2’.

Previously, we’ve reported on the director’s desire to have more women Avengers in the movie universe. Whedon has a strong grasp on delivering strong female characters in his work. It’s sorta his thing now, so I’m sure he’ll deliver yet again with the ‘Untitled Marvel’s Avengers Sequel’. As much as I’d love to see new characters such as Spider-Woman, Miss Marvel, and She-Hulk, he’ll have the women of Phase Two, which could potentially include Agent Sharon Carter in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and god knows who else, to juggle as well. When it comes down to it, whoever Joss Whedon decides to throw into the mix in ‘The Avengers 2’, I’m sure we’ll be pleased to some degree.
