Unlike the amount of time ‘Star Wars’ fans had to wait for Episodes II and III to come to theaters, the official ‘Star Wars’ Facebook page announced on Sunday that the 3D version of the two films will be released back to back in 2013.

The announcement was made at the Star Wars Celebration IV that was held in Orlando, Florida. Considering the 3D version of ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ grossed over $100 million worldwide, it’s no surprise that ‘Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’ would also get the 3D treatment. After all, even though the 3D version of the first chapter didn’t make a whole lot of money, it was enough to push the film past the $1 billion mark and place it into the top ten list of highest grossing films of all time.

Originally it was thought that the films would be released a year apart from each other but Lucasfilm had other plans as they announced that ‘Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones’ would be released in theaters on September 20, 2013 with ‘Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’ arriving a month later on October 11, 2013. Fans should be in for a real treat as the process for the fully post-converted 3D films was overseen by George Lucas himself!

The movies don’t seem to have much competition on the sci-fi front during their release dates. ‘Attack of the Clones will be going up against the movie ‘Rush’ starring Chris Hemsworth while ‘Revenge of the Sith’ will be released on the same day as Tom Hank’s ‘Captain Phillips’.

No word was heard about when the original trilogy (‘Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope’, ‘Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back’, ‘Star Wars: Episode VI: Return on the Jedi’) would also get a 3D release, but here’s hoping soon. If LucasFilm decides to also do a back-to-back treatment, then Luke Skywalker may return to the big screen as early as 2015.

Even after the less than enthusiastic reviews of the 3D version ‘The Phantom Menace’ in 3D, would you still pay to see ‘Attack of the Clones’ or ‘Revenge of the Sith’ in 3D?  LucaFilm hopes so! In the meantime, here are the trailers for the two films just to get you into the ‘Star Wars’ mood:
