‘Kick-Ass 2’ is gearing up to start filming next month with Aaron Johnson (‘Nearly Famous,’ ‘The Illusionist’), Chloe Moretz (‘Carrie,’ ‘Dark Shadows’) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (‘Fright Night,’ ‘Superbad’) reprising their roles from the first film. Now news comes out that the heroes’ side will get a new addition and a villain’s mom returns as Donald Faison and Yancy Butler have signed on to join the cast for the upcoming sequel.
Faison is said to be playing the pseudo-superhero Dr. Gravity. The character is a copy writer by day but pretends to be a physics professor at Columbia University who has a pole that gives him the power to change the density of objects (the pole is actually a baseball bat covered in foil.) Fighting alongside Kick-Ass, he also begins the vigilante group Justice Forever.
Faison is no stranger to playing a doctor as he is well known playing Dr. Christopher Turk in the series ‘Scrubs.’ He’s appeared in several movies including ‘Clueless,’ ‘Remember the Titans,’ and ‘Uptown Girls’ and can currently be seen in the TVLand series ‘The Exes’ which has been renewed for a second season.
Faison will be joining Yancy Butler who is returning to the franchise to reprise her role as Christopher D’Amico/Red Mist’s mother, Angie D’Amico. Besides being known as Red Mist’s mom, Butler is also recognizable from the series ‘Witchblade’ and the Syfy original movie ‘Lake Placid 3.’
‘Kick-Ass 2’ will adapt the recent ‘Kick Ass 2’ comic series, which ended late last year, as well as the ‘Hit Girl’ series that is currently in the middle of its run. Matthew Vaughn, who originally wrote and directed the original ‘Kick-Ass,’ won’t be returning for this one as he will be tied up with the sequel to ‘X-Men: First Class’ but will stay on as producer of the project. Helming the feature instead will be Jeff Wadlow (‘Never Back Down,’ ‘Cry_Wolf’) who also wrote the screenplay. While the comic book series is not for the faint hearted, it will be interesting to see how Wadlow has adapted the story for movie audiences.
The news of the addition of Faison and Butler follows the announcement of John Leguizamo joining the cast as Red Mist’s bodyguard, Javier.
While there is no specific date as to when the film will be released, according to the movie’s Facebook page it will be sometime in 2013.
So, how excited are you for another ‘Kick-Ass’ movie?
