The new ‘Dredd’ movie will be released in a few short months and although most of the attention has been on the big films such as ‘Prometheus,’ ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and ‘The Amazing Spiderman,’ that doesn’t mean ‘Dredd’ has been forgotten.
As more and more details of the film come out, fans have been excited to see Pete Travis’ take on the popular comic anti-hero. The fact that the movie garnered an R rating and that it will be very different to the Sylvester Stallone version (thank goodness!) and closer to the comic one has fans already chomping at the bit to see it.
Now we finally have an official synopsis to go with the film. It’s pretty lengthy but well worth the read:
The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.
During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.
The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and director Pete Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film. Filmed in 3D with stunning slow motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
But this bit of news may please fans even more. John Wagner, the co-creator of ‘Judge Dredd,’ saw the “finished” version of the film a little over a week ago and gave it high praise as well as his personal recommendation that it is worth watching. He posted his thoughts about the movie on his Facebook page:
As for the “quibble” that he mentioned, some say the it was the use of modern day vehicles in the film instead of trying to make them look more futuristic. But considering this was a smaller budget compared to other comic book movies out there, this truly is indeed a quibble in the big picture of the entire film.
Rumor has it that a trailer would be released for ‘Dredd’ would be shown before ‘Prometheus.’ If that’s the case, it won’t be long before it hits the web. If that’s the case, keep checking back here as you know we’ll have it up for you to see!
While we’re waiting on that trailer, a new video just hit the web (below)that gives us a brief glimpse at what ‘Dredd’ will look like in motion. It’s a CGI showreel from the animators that has Judge Anderson blowing away a perp. Be warned, if you don’t like violence, you may consider it slightly graphic.
Update 6/5/2012 10pm – The video was pulled from YouTube. We’ll repost it as soon as we find it again.
