In ‘Green Lantern’ #6, Green Lantern Sinestro tracked down Lyssa Drak, the ex-member of his Sinestro Corps and the holder of the Book of the Black. During Sinestro’s battle with Lyssa, he gets a vision from the Book that reveals to him the secret plans of the Guardians of the Universe.

As this issue opens, Sinestro has again returned to Earth to ask his ex-partner (and ex-nemesis) Hal Jordan for help. Caught in the middle of a trist with Carol, Hal refuses to go with Sinestro on another of his personal errands. Sinestro doesn’t offer Hal much of a choice and uses his ring to take him by force. Hal fights back only to be reminded that his ring isn’t a real ring and that it can’t hurt Sinestro. In the heat of their battle, the Indigo Tribe appears with the intent on taking Sinestro. Meanwhile, back on Oa, the Guardians are interrogating Lyssa in search of the Book of the Black. As the issue closes, Hal learns not only the truth behind the Guardian’s plans but also one of the mysteries of the Indigo Tribe. I won’t give either of those secrets away but, rest assured, the Lanterns are in for some deep trouble.

Writer Geoff John’s has been consistently  bringing high-quality stories ever since he returned Hal Jordan to life in the pre-New 52 ‘Green Lantern: Rebirth’ and this issue is no exception. John’s seems to have a grasp of the Lanterns’ history and characters more so than any writer I’ve read in many decades. His Sinestro is arrogant, and ferocious but always behind his cold logical exterior. His Hal is impetuous and heroic. And his Guardians… creepy otherworldly little beings that I wouldn’t trust as far as I could throw them (even though that’s probably pretty far).

The art from Doug Mahnke is, as usual, perfect Lantern material. But the colors from Alex Sinclair are what make this issue. The flashing and glowing colors of the ring constructs in the battles make the battles a true sight to behold. But it’s the dark scenes later on in the issue where the lighting truly makes for some masterfully ominous images.

Well done, GL crew. Very well done indeed!
