The beginning of the year usually marks the start of pilot production in Hollywood and many studios are gearing up to start casting and filming pilots that hope to see the light of television in the fall season. One such pilot is an untitled project from ‘2012’ director Roland Emmerich.

Emmerich is joining the list of big screen directors who are crossing over to the small screen. His untitled pilot (which he co-wrote with Harald Kloser) is the first drama pilot pick up from ABC for the 2012-2013 season and has a supernatural twist to the storyline.

According to Variety, the pilot is “set in New York City against the backdrop of the Presidential race of 2012. It centers on a young astrophysics student who learns his destiny lies not in science but somewhere between Heaven and Hell.”

2012 seems to be a good year for Emmerich as he and Kloser also co-wrote the apocalyptic movie ‘2012’ starring John Cusak and Amanda Peet. In addition, Emmerich also directed ‘Independence Day’, ‘The Day After Tomorrow’, ‘Universal Soldier’ and ‘Godzilla’ to name a few. Whether or not this untitled pilot will have as much mass destruction as his other movies have in it is yet to be seen but I’m willing to watch just to see.

The premise of the pilot sounds interesting and hopefully the execs at ABC will like it enough to order at least 13 episodes to start. If not, the pilot may end up where most pilots do…on a shelf never to be seen (that is, unless it was ordered from the Syfy channel…‘Three Inches’ anyone?)
