In what seems to be eye raising news today, Deadline has reported that Patty Jenkins has stepped down as the director for ‘Thor 2 ‘citing “creative differences.”
It was a little over a month ago when Marvel studios sent out a press release naming Jenkins as Kenneth Branagh’s successor. Everyone was very excited about the selection, even Branagh himself who told Moviefon last month, “I, along with a lot of other people, am very excited about the appointment of Patty Jenkins. I think that’s a great choice to direct the movie.”
Jenkins no longer directing the movie comes as a big surprise as reports had her actively working on pre-production as of this past weekend. With filming to start next April, Marvel is now hastening to find another director and is talking to talent agencies to see who is available.
It’s not sure how clear cut the ‘’creative differences” explanation is as Deadline mentioned “the feeling is that she’ll probably end up working on one of these superhero films, but perhaps not on a sequel.” However, when asked for a statement, Marvel’s reps had no comment at this time.
Don Payne, who also co-wrote the first film, is currently working on the script for ‘Thor 2.’ Had Jenkins stayed on, she would have been the first female to direct a superhero film for Marvel studios and the second female to direct a movie based on a Marvel superhero (Lexi Alexander was first for directing ‘Punisher: War Zone’)
‘Thor 2’ has a release date set for November 15, 2011 and sees the return of Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston in their previous roles. With Marvel looking for a new director, who would you want to see at the helm of this sequel?
