In a great bit of casting news, Lionsgate has announced today that Aaron Eckhart will be playing the lead role of Adam in the movie ‘I, Frankenstein.’ Filming is set to being in January 2012 in Australia.

Eckhart is best known for his portrayal as Harvey Dent/Two Face in ‘The Dark Knight’ and Sgt. Michael Nantz in ‘Battle of Los Angeles.’ According to the press release,  Lionsgate’s Co-COO and President of the Motion Picture Group Joe Drake states ,”This story is all about what it means to be human, and there could be no more achingly human performance than the one Aaron gave in RABBIT HOLE. We are so excited to see what he will bring to this role.”  Producer Tom Rosenberg added, “We know that Aaron, with his proven range, depth and intelligence, is going to make an iconic ADAM.”

The film was written and will be directed by Stuart Beattie (writer of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies, ‘Collateral’ and ‘G.I. Joe’) and is based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux who also co-created the ’Underworld’ franchise. ‘I, Frankenstein’ brings back many classic monsters such as the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Invisible Man, Dracula and deposits them in a contemporary setting.  In the novel, Adam (Dr. Frankenstein’s monster) has survived through the times due to a genetic quirk in his creation. He is now a private investigator and finds himself caught up in an epic war between two immortal clans. Beattie says of the movie, “Mary Shelly’s story is about the creation of the first human being. This is the story about that being becoming human.”

‘I, Frankenstein’ has a release date of February 22, 2013 in the U.S.
