Dynamite Entertainment has a long track record of reviving cult figures from pop culture history into comic book form. Among the comics currently published by Dynamite, you can find: ‘RoboCop’, ‘Highlander’, ‘The Bionic Man’, and most recently George R.R. Martin’s ‘Game of Thrones’. This December, Dynamite is going to bring the latest retro pop icon to the four-color page with the ‘Voltron’ ongoing series.

‘Voltron’, based on the 1984 television series of the same name, follows the story of five kids who each pilot a robot lion. The lions can combine to form the larger humanoid robot ‘Voltron’ of the series title. The Voltron team is the defense force for the planet Arus that is constantly under attack by King Zarkon and his army of giant robots. The television series became a huge pop culture phenomenon in the mid 80s and you’d be hard pressed to find a kid from that era that doesn’t have a warm spot in their heart for the giant sword-wielding mechanical protector.

The comic series will feature all new tales of the Voltron Force. Of the new adventures, Dynamite editor Joe Rybandt says:

“We’ve been given a lot of latitude by our partners at Classic Media and World Events. Nothing is off the table and if you’ve followed our releases featuring pop culture icons, you know that we take the best and add the new and create something unique and special on its own. Expect no different from Voltron.”

The ‘Voltron’ comic book series will be written by Dynamite’s Brandon Thomas (‘Robin: The Big League’) and feature a series of variant covers, including two by the incomparable Alex Ross (‘Kingdom Come’), the man who won the Comic Buyer’s Guide award for favorite painter award so many times that CBG had to retire it. The artwork, as expected is stunning. Fans of giant robots, adventure, anime, and just plain fun will have a lot to look forward to this December when ‘Voltron’ #1 hits newsstands.
