Brad Pitt’s new post-apocalyptic zombie film, ‘World War Z’, has been given a release date of December 21, 2012, according to Paramount Studios.  The film is directed by Marc Forster of ‘Quantum of Solace’ fame and currently under production.

The screenplay, written by J. Michael Straczynski (‘Thor’) and Matthew Michael Carnahan (‘State of Play’), was adapted from the 2006 horror book ‘World War Z’ by Max Brooks. The book was about a researcher for the UN going around the world to determine the cause of a zombie apocalypse. However, from the synopsis Paramount released recently, it seems that they’ve taken some artistic liberty with the storyline. Now, according to Paramount, “the story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.”

The film has Brad Pitt in the starring role named after the book’s author with Mireille Enos (‘Big Love’) on board to play his wife. James Badge Dale (‘Rubicon’) will also star as Captain Speke who tries to alert his military higher ups of impending zombie attacks at the cost of detention. Bryan Cranston (‘Breaking Bad’) is said to have a small but flashy part in the film.

‘World War Z’ will have some pretty tough competition during its release. The weekend before, Peter Jackson’s  ‘Lord of the Rings’ prequel ‘The Hobbit’ is scheduled to be out and the weekend after, Fox Studios will be releasing ‘Life of Pi’ with Disney’s ‘Lone Ranger’ with Johnny Depp also out on that same day. Of course, this will all only happen if the Mayan calendars are wrong and the world does not end on December 21, 2012.
