It’s been two long years since we heard from the crew of the Enterprise, but news from co-writers /producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman say that filming may begin as early as January of next year.

Why so long for a sequel?  According to David Lindelof, all four writers of the original ‘Star Trek’ remake were busy with other productions. Lindelof had his hands full working on the movie ‘Prometheus’ with director Ridley Scott, J.J. Abrams was busy with ‘Super 8’, and Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman “sort of had their own empires to manage.” All four are now back and have been together getting a script written.  In an interview with On the Red Carpet, Lindelof talks about the script saying, “…I think that the bar is very high. We are not going to be satisfied with “oh, this is fine… it has been very very tricky, but I think we have finally broken through and figured out what the movie is going to be.”

It’s been reported that J.J. Abrahms deliberately used the concept of time travel/alternate reality in the original ‘Star Trek’ remake in order to be able to give any future films a brand new playing field to work with. “The idea, now that we are in an independent timeline, allows us to use any of the ingredients from the past – or come up with brand-new ones – to make potential stories.”

Rumors abound of what this script will be about. The one thing we do know, according to Orci, is that story has already been pitched to Paramount and “they loved it.” Scott Chamblis, production designer from the first movie, is back on board and is already designing a number of alien planets and how the Enterprise looks may change. Also back will be the original actors of the crew: Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Anton Yelchin (Chekov) and John Cho (Sulu).
