With Chris Evans done with being Captain America after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame‘, there are always ways that the star-spangled Avenger could return thanks to time travel, a multiverse, and other comic book tropes. However, would fans and the franchise creators want to see this money making actor reprise his role one last time? While it could feasibly happen in the ‘Black Widow‘ flashback movie or ‘Loki’ miniseries which takes place in the past, would it cheapen his aging from the end of The Infinity Saga? ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers’ writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely both feel that Cap should hang up his shield for good.
First up, Markus shares his reasoning that not only should Steve Rogers be done in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but that Tony Stark should be as well:
“I also don’t want to. I love writing for Cap, I love Evans. But I really feel, much like Tony, we got them to a place where they don’t need to do it anymore. I’d hate to gin up something hokey to get them back.”
We did see both of these characters enjoy fully satisfying and complete arcs. I believe the only way that either Steve should have a way back would be in a movie that took place before ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Stark has a scapegoat if he downloaded his essence into an AI, but even that would feel like a bit of a stretch after giving him a family in the last film.
For McFeely, it is ‘Avengers: Endgame’ specifically that he has in mind:
“I do worry that if they do stuff like that, it’ll ding Endgame in the rearview mirror. This is such an important and such an interesting moment in movies because a very successful studio just put their tools down.”
I have to agree that these two actors should be done with the present and future of the MCU. As to their appearance in flashback films? I’d be quite open to seeing that play out on the big screen.
Do you agree with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely that Chris Evans should be done making Marvel films? Would you be open to the actor returning in a movie that took place in the past? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
