According to Hollywood Reporter, on Friday, Marvel will be conducting screen tests for one of the final roles to be cast in director Joss Whedon’s superhero team epic, ‘The Avengers’.
The currently unnamed role was revealed this week on Jimmy Kimmel Live by Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson, who plays the role of Nick Fury in the film, stated that the female role is that of his “sidekick.”
The shortlist of actresses includes current ‘V’ star Morena Baccarin (‘Justice League’, ‘Stargate SG-1’), who worked on Whedon’s science fiction television series ‘Firefly’, Jessica Lucas (‘Cloverfield’), Cobie Smulders (‘Smallville’, ‘Andromeda’) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’)
Rounding out the cast is Scarlett Johansson (‘Iron Man 2′,’The Prestige’) as the Black Widow, Robert Downey Jr. (‘Iron Man’, Sherlock Holmes’) as Iron Man, Jackson (‘The Spirit’, ‘Star Wars’) as Nick Fury, Jeremy Renner (’28 Weeks Later’, ‘Angel’) as Hawkeye, Chris Evans (‘Fantastic Four’, ‘Sunshine’) as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo (‘Blindness’, ‘Shutter Island’) as the Hulk and Chris Hemsworth (‘Star Trek’) as Thor.
‘The Avengers’ is set to begin filming in April.
