Weird City

Jordan Peele is delving into the world of science fiction in his latest project, the Youtube Premium anthology ‘Weird City’ which has just been announced as premiering on the service on February 13, with the release of a star-studded trailer that gives the first idea of what to expect from this new comedy.  Clearly, this series, which is set “in the not-too-distant future metropolis of Weird” addresses an extreme case of gentrification and the ever-growing caste system.  It seems each episode will follow a different group of protagonists living in this world that is a lot like ours, just slightly more high tech.  It’s like ‘Black Mirror’, but not so… well, dark.

‘Weird City’ is populated by some familiar faces, including Awkwafina, Malcolm Barrett, Yvette Nicole Brown, LeVar Burton, Michael Cera, Laverne Cox, Auli’i Cravalho, Rosario Dawson, Sara Gilbert, Mark Hamill, Trevor Jackson, Gillian Jacobs, Dylan O’Brien, Ed O’Neill, Hannah Simone, and Steven Yeun.  The cast also includes Shaughn Buchholz, Ithamar Enriquez, Anthony Holiday, Emily Kosloski, Pam Murphy, Vladimir John Perez, and Cynthy Wu.

Burton’s character, Dr. Negari, appears to run through the entire series, as a scientist spearheading the invention of the various marvels that make living in Weird the bizarre wonderland it is.

You can catch a lot of the cast in the first trailer below:

Peele created ‘Weird City’ with his ‘Key & Peele’ collaborator Charlie Sanders.  Both serve as executive producers and writers of the show.  (Sanders also appears on-screen in at least one episode.)  Among the directors are Adam Bernstein (‘Fargo’, ‘Better Call Saul’) and Amy Heckerling (‘Clueless’, ‘Red Oaks’).

From the mind of Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders comes WEIRD CITY, a satirical anthology set in the not-too-distant future metropolis of Weird. In this dystopian setting of our show, the middle class has completely vanished dividing Weird City into two sections: Above the Line (The Haves), and Below the Line (The Have Nots). Presiding over the denizens of the city is the strange and mysterious Dr. Negari, who weaves all of our stories together. Each episode is a topic that pertains to present day life in America and the world: social media addiction, online dating, fitness obsession, etc.. WEIRD CITY captures the unease of modern urban living, in a bizarre and peculiar lens.

You can book your trip to ‘Weird City’ On Youtube on February 13.
