Akiva Goldsman (‘A Beautiful Mind,’ ‘Doctor Sleep’) has been a non-stop creative force in Hollywood in recent years, and now he is slated to bring Marcus Sakey’s ‘Brilliance’ trilogy to the big screen. Goldsman will be both writing the films and also produce them with Shane Salerno of The Story Factory. At this time a studio isn’t attached quite yet, but the pair will soon be shopping around their idea for adapting the book series which has already sold over two million copies across the globe.

According to Goldsman, “It’s rare to find complex characters and deep world-building in the same literary work. Marcus Sakey’s Brilliance trilogy does just that. I’m excited to dig in with Story Factory to help generate the movies these wonderful novels deserve.”

When talking about this new take on his books, Sakey shared that, “Akiva Goldsman has a remarkable history of creating worlds that are rich both in ideas and in pure entertainment. He writes deeply compelling films that leave you talking afterward. I’m thrilled he’s writing Brilliance.”

In the trilogy, 1% of the world’s population is born as a “brilliant” which are people who have superior mental abilities. The government tracks these individuals to make sure that they aren’t abusing their powers and tasked to do so is Federal agent Nick Cooper. Cooper is also a brilliant and uses his abilities to track down others with these gifts. In the novels and film, we follow him as he is working to infiltrate a group of radicals and find another brilliant who is trying to cause a new civil war.

Legendary Pictures previously tried to adapt the film which had Noomi Rapace as one of the leading actors who was at one point slated to work across from Will Smith and when he left the production he had temporarily been replaced by Jared Leto. Obviously, this iteration never had a chance to see the light of day.
