Pennyworth Young Alfred Jack Bannon

A butler is born.  The star of EPIX’s new series ‘Pennyworth’ has been found in the form of ‘Endeavor”s Jack Bannon.  The series, created by Bruno Heller, focuses on the life of Bruce Wayne’s butler as a young man, a former soldier for the British SAS, who forms a security company in swingin’ ’60s London, where he meets and goes to work for Thomas Wayne, the man who will eventually father Bruce Wayne, who will eventually grow up to become Batman.  Thomas is in London seeking his missing sister Patricia.

Here is the previously released description of Alfred from ‘Pennyworth’:

Boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty, he’s the kind of person people would never take for a SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.

In the series, Alfred and Thomas will have to face off against the mysterious criminal Sykes, the head of the Raven Society.  They will be assisted by Marcus “Bazza” Barrington, from Trinidad, and Scotsman Wallace “Dave Boy” MacDuff.  Also in the mix is dancer Esme Whitaker who Sykes has kidnapped.  Reportedly, Thomas’ kind, just personality will make a major impression on Alfred, who eventually becomes the caregiver to Bruce after Thomas and his wife Martha are killed.

Coincidentally, Bannon’s most recent project, ‘Endeavor’ is also set in the ’60s.  He has also appeared on the series ‘The Giblet Boys’, ‘The Loch’ and ‘Clique’, and in the movies ‘The Imitation Game’ with Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley and David Ayer’s ‘Fury’ starring Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf.

Bruno Heller previously created ‘Gotham’ and served as executive producer with Danny Cannon.  Both will serve the same role on ‘Pennyworth’, and also collaborated on the script for the pilot.

‘Pennyworth’ is expected to begin production in London on October 22, so expect more casting announces to arrive pretty quickly.  The first season will consist of ten episodes.
