Solo' Jon Kasdan

While fans and critics have generally enjoyed ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ the box office didn’t treat it well which has made any chance of a sequel happening questionable at best. While you could argue if it was timing, production woes, “Star Wars” burn out, unhappiness from how ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ played out, or any number of other reasons the movie didn’t perform well, it still is a question to many if we could end up seeing a follow up or not. Now, writer Jon Kasdan weighs in on if it could happen or not.

The detail was a nugget that was part of a pretty extensive set of “53 random factoids & notes about the making & writing” of ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ to honor the digital release of the film. This nugget comes from #52 on the list which also seems to be the last even if he titled it 53:

“To be honest, I think the challenge has much more to do with the foreign box office than the U.S. Personally, I think there are great Star Wars movies to be made that don’t need to cost quite so much. Hopefully, that will be the trend in the years to come, and maybe, just maybe that trend will allow us, one way or another, to tell more stories with Alden, Joonas, Emilia, and Donald. With those actors and Ron Howard, I would jump at the opportunity. Given the way Hollywood, and the culture at large, seem to run from anything labeled a disappointment, the odds seem like they’re against it happening anytime soon. But, I suppose, Han wouldn’t have it any other way.”

It doesn’t sound like the cast and crew currently believe that a follow up could happen which is an unfortunate state of affairs though not at all an unexpected one. Honestly, a sequel that puts a focus on Lando with Han as a secondary character and somehow further giving us Darth Maul and his Crimson Dawn criminal enterprise sounds like a movie that would be fun to see and expand the seedy underbelly of the Star Wars universe. Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Lando having to deal with some shady elements but only time will tell.
