Amazon’s latest superhero series ‘The Boys‘ just got some huge star power as Karl Urban has been tapped to play the leading character of Billy Butcher. This could be horrible news for anyone hoping that he would be reprising his role as Judge Dredd in ‘Mega City One‘ as his schedule might have just been filled for the foreseeable future.

‘The Boys’ was initially created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and is currently being adapted for the streaming studio by Eric Kripke who is also the series showrunner. In this world, superheroes have embraced the worst parts of celebrity and fame, and a group of vigilantes which the book is named after is trying to put a stop to the corrupt superheroes who have established themselves. Billy Butcher is the leader of The Boys though has a secret agenda of his own that will slowly reveal itself throughout the course of the series. The story starts with Butcher recruiting Jack Quaid’s Hughie whose ex-girlfriend was accidentally killed by Jesse T. Usher‘s A-Train.

Urban will be joining a cast that also includes Erin Moriarty, Antony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, Nathan Mitchell, and Karen Fukuhara. The pilot is being directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen who had previously adapted Garth Ennis’s ‘Preacher’ for AMC.

‘The Boys’ is a rather dark and gritty superhero franchise and it is interesting to see Amazon being the studio pushing it forward as they further diversify their streaming options.

What do you think about Karl Urban playing Billy Butcher in ‘The Boys’? Will there still be any chance that Urban finds a way to be part of ‘Mega City One’ or has that ship sailed? Do you feel that we’re going to be in for something special in this series? Share your thoughts below!
