Wreck-It Ralph 2

Ralph and Vanellope are about to leave their happy arcade for a wide and mysterious new dimension– the internet!  Disney has released a new trailer for ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2’ the sequel to their 2012 Pixar hit.  The follow-up once again stars John C. Reilly as the voice of Ralph and Sarah Silverman as Vanellope von Schweetz.

Co-director Rich Moore explains:

“A part in Vanellope’s game Sugar Rush breaks, and in order to preserve that and save the way of life they have in the arcade, they go to this very modern place, which is going to put their friendship to the test.”

Fellow co-director Phil Johnston further elaborates:

“Ralph is this older video game character who’s thrust into this world that’s confusing and constantly changing, and we lean into that notion that the internet is different today than it was yesterday, and it will be different tomorrow than it was today.  That’s part of the challenge that Ralph in particular faces. Meanwhile, Vanellope’s much more equipped to deal with that than Ralph is. She’s younger and more spirited, and he’s sort of a big, oafish doofus who can’t quite handle it.”

In the trailer, we see Ralph and Venellope encountering what you would expect including app games and emojis but also such “fun” elements as pop-up ads and clickbait.

Not shown in the clip are Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer) and Calhoun (Jane Lynch) but the directors assure that these popular supporting characters are definitely in it, although they couldn’t delve much farther than that.  Moore responded “We’ll see them for sure.  They have an important role in the movie, which we can’t discuss now, but they’re definitely in there.” After laughing, he added “Jack McBrayer called Phil constantly, saying, ‘When am I gonna be in the movie? What is Felix doing?!’ He wore us down.”

One new face/voice in the new film is a trendy algorithm named Yesss, voiced by Taraji P. Henson.  And the directors teased the idea of Vanellope finding her tribe, discovering her heritage as a Disney Princess, but a cameo appearance by those characters has been known for a while– with the original voices returning for the modern characters.  And another, perhaps more unexpected guest appearance comes courtesy of Anthony Daniels as C-3PO.
