Outside of Kryptonians, we haven’t seen much in the way of villains for the upcoming Syfy series ‘Krypton‘ though today have gotten our first look at Brainiac. Yes, Superman’s foe is going to be on the loose in this series, and I have to admit he looks amazing! Blake Ritson (‘RocknRolla,’ ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’) is taking on the character, and I just can’t get over how amazing this classic supervillain looks!

According to Ritson about his new role:

“I’ve played characters who’ve objectively committed monstrous actions, but feel entirely justified, as they’ve acted from a misplaced sense of a noble cause. Generally speaking, people cast themselves as the hero in their own narrative.”

Brainiac has often thought only of himself in the past, so this is a great way to play the character. Riston explains what the character’s motivations were while playing him:

“Yes, he traverses the universe in a gigantic skull ship, ripping cities out of planets, miniaturizing them and placing them on board. But he does so in the spirit of conservation. In his mind, he’s committed to the ultimate philanthropic act: saving all of creation. In many ways it’s analogous to Noah plucking out two of every animal to ensure their survival, even while knowing that others must perish.”

So portraying him as someone who believes he is doing right throughout the universe is a fun take which long-term fans should enjoy seeing.

As to where he fits into the show, Shaun Sipos’s Adam Strange warns Superman’s grandfather Seg-El about the villain’s coming which isn’t a time period that DC has covered in the books before:

“It’s something of a blank canvas that has allowed a lot of freedom for the writers to world-build. This is a major expansion of the Superman universe and mythology and the civilization that fostered the greatest hero that ever lived.”

I feel that all of the cast and crew have mirrored that sentiment over time. It almost makes you wonder if there are some substantial deviations from Superman canon that they have in store for us.

Are you looking forward to seeing Blake Ritson’s take on Brainiac in ‘Krypton’? Do you believe that playing the villain as someone who thinks he is doing noble work is the right way to go? Share your thoughts below!
