The Legion of Super Heroes is here!  Well, actually… they don’t really seem like a Legion just yet.

‘Supergirl’ will return on January 15, following the midseason cliffhanger that saw Kara (Melissa Benoist) savagely beaten by Reign (Odette Annabel) and left in a coma.  But like death, it doesn’t seem that comas mean the same thing to Kryptonians as they do to humans.  While Kara is unconscious in the real world, she seems to be aware of her predicament inside her head.  But with the Girl of Steel out of commission, National City is at the mercy of Reign.  Luckily, reinforcements are here!

Mon-El (Chris Wood) arrives with his Flight Ring-wearing companions, including his wife Saturn Girl (Amy Jackson) and Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath, right).  In the trailer for the first new episode of the year, we only catch glimpses of the others, but newcomer Brainiac 5 is shown in closeup extended cuts, giving a pretty good idea of what to expect.  We even hear Winn (Jeremy Jordan) christen them with the name the “Legion of Super Heroes.”

Like I said, there are only three of them.  Can they be enough?

Brainiac 5 is somehow able to enter Kara’s psyche and will most likely use his 12th-level intellect to guide her out of her catatonic state.  In the comics, Brainiac 5 is Supergirl’s romantic interest.  With Mon-El now wed to Saturn Girl, that leaves Kara single.  Will she mingle with this bizarre green-skinned alien with light-up diodes on his forehead?

To be honest, this half-alien, half-computer may have to endear himself with both her and the audience, because as he appears now, he’s really creepy looking.  In fact, having just watched ‘The Toys That Made Us’ on Netflix, he reminds me a little of Karg from the live action ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie (left).  Maybe it’s just the hair.

The question now becomes, will we see any more Legionnaires?  After all, there are dozens of them in the comics.  It might be cool to see at least a few more in upcoming episodes.

‘Supergirl’ returns on Monday, January 15 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW, but please note that come February, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ will be taking over its time slot, while the network’s newest superhero series ‘Black Lightning’ will take ‘Legends” post-‘Flash’ spot for nine weeks.

What do you think of Jesse Rath as Brainiac 5?
