SPOILER ALERT: This article discusses the Season 7 finale of ‘Game of Thrones’, “The Dragon and the Wolf” so if you are not caught up, you may wish to turn back now.

The big twist in the Season 7 finale of ‘Game of Thrones’ is that… there really wasn’t a twist.  At least not one that fans hadn’t seen coming for some time now.  What’s something of a twist is that one of the most popular characters on the show not only isn’t who he seemed all along but the name that everyone uses in reference to him, isn’t even his name!

Yes, Jon Snow isn’t really named Jon Snow.  His real name is Aegon Targaryen and he isn’t, as previously believed, the bastard son of Eddard “Ned” Stark, but the legitimate son of Ned’s sister Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, the older brother of Viserys and Daenerys.  That means that Aegon/Jon is not the rightful King of the North, but he does have a rightful claim to the Iron Throne– moreso than Daenerys, actually.  This could complicate things as that has been Dany’s goal this whole time, but that could largely be because Robert Baratheon has always been seen as a usurper to the throne.  Should Daenerys claim the throne, she would be the last Targaryen to do so, as she can’t have kids (at least so we believe, as her child was stillborn before she became the Mother of Dragons) and she is the last surviving Targaryen.

But Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) commented:

“I’ve worked so hard, I don’t want to share that throne.  No. The throne’s big enough for one dragon bum, and that’s mine. That’s it!”

For the time being, they must first defeat the Night King.  After that, they can worry about whose bum fits the throne best. If they survive.  I mean it IS ‘GoT’.  And it isn’t as though they can just show up and take it.  There’s still Cersei Lannister and Robert Baratheon to consider.

Even though Jon… er, Aegon, wasn’t really seeking the Iron Throne, is it possible he will claim it now that it is more rightfully his than hers?  Or will he stick with the original plan and allow Daenerys to claim it?  (Then again, they aren’t the only ones gunning for it.)  If Daenerys takes the Iron Throne, Jon could still claim the North, with Sansa ruling over House Stark.

Well maybe we’ll find out in a year… or so…
