Following the release of ‘Tron: Legacy’ in 2010, there was plenty of talk about a sequel to complete the revolutionary trilogy started back in 1982. Many people (including the film’s stars) assumed it was on its way from the House of Mouse as cast members were confirmed, shooting was supposedly scheduled, and director Joseph Kosinski talked more and more about the project. Things took a turn for the worst in 2015 though as it appeared to be game over for Sam Flynn, Quorra, and the other programs and users of The Grid. Even Tron himself Bruce Boxleitner has given up hope that Disney will eventually come back around to the technological cult hit. However, the man responsible for all of this (at least in the movie) sounds like he believes that there’s still a chance a third film could return from being derezzed.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly to promote his upcoming film ‘Only The Brave’, which reunited him with Kosinski, Kevin Flynn actor and all around legend Jeff Bridges took a moment to address rumor surrounding the on again/off again third ‘Tron’ movie. While he didn’t give any indication whether it was actually back on or completely shut down forever, Bridges did share a cool idea that would be incredibly fitting for the film franchise that pioneered CGI and the combination of live-action and animation.

“Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard those rumors too. I hope that happens. I think Joe’s got the script and everything, you know. Yeah, I don’t know that I’m supposed to talk about it or not. I don’t know. It should be the first virtual reality movie, you know? Wouldn’t that be cool…to see Tron in that world?”

By the sounds of things, Bridges doesn’t actually know anything concrete about ‘Tron 3’. For all we know, it could never happen. But if it did, Disney would be doing the characters and the story a great disservice if they didn’t at least consider this idea. The original ‘Tron’ was groundbreaking when it came to filmmaking technology, so it would only make sense for any new chapters to utilize the newest and coolest tools available. I don’t really know what exactly those tools are of if they even exist, but could you imagine entering The Grid along with the Flynns and Quorra by using a VR headset and looking around a whole 360 degrees to see the action. We could even ride along on a light cycle right there with our heroes as they try to save the digital world and beyond. I mean, I don’t know how a feature film would work like that exactly in terms of filming or ticket sales or anything like that, but it’s still really cool to think about.

How would you feel if the follow up to ‘Tron: Legacy’ somehow utilized VR technology? What are some epic scenes from the franchise that would be made immensely cooler? And do you even want another ‘Tron’ movie? (Spoilers: You totally should.) Speculate away in the comments below.
