wonder-woman

Wonder Woman‘ is going to be the first female superhero blockbuster film to be released and director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot share a bit on the importance of the film. With gender equality and the pay scale of stars in Hollywood being looked at as more important than ever, it isn’t just a major point that this is a female lead superhero movie but the first live-action film with a budget over $100 million that is being directed by a woman as well. With $120 million to play with, this is a big bet on DC’s part and if the trailers are any indication it is a bet that will pay off in spades.

For playing Princess Diana, it is important for Gal Gadot that she isn’t playing a Disney Princess here and an all out superhero. The reason being for Gadot?

Growing up, I had Superman and Batman to look up to. All the boys and all the girls, that’s what we had. I think that it’s so important that we have also strong female figures to look up to, and Wonder Woman is an amazing one. It’s great that after 75…years that this character had been around, finally, she gets her own movie.

Male superheroes are a dime a dozen, and while that is perfect for all of the boys and men out here, Wonder Woman will be the first to cinematically embrace that women can be superheroes as well. Marvel has done the same on the small screen with ‘Jessica Jones’ and will be on the big screen with ‘Captain Marvel’ but the DCEU is leading the way here, and it looks to have been done right!

Gadot isn’t the only one making waves though as the director is giving us the first blockbuster with a budget over $100 million to work with.

According to Jenkins:

I think more diverse stories will cause you to hire more diverse writers [and] will cause you to hire more diverse directors. Obviously the audience is there.

As this doesn’t just look to be good in its own right but possibly the first DCEU film that won’t just do good at the box office but be enjoyed by critics and viewers alike, she has absolutely called it! Hopefully, this is an indication of things to come as Hollywood needs to continue to innovate if they want to create films that aren’t stagnant and follow the same formula which many have over the past few years.

Are you looking forward to ‘Wonder Woman’? Do you think that Gal Gadot will knock this out of the park and pave the wave for a slew of female superheroes to come? Is Jenkins going to prove what most of us know that women can direct a huge blockbuster and release a box office success? Share your thoughts below!
