This isn’t the first time we’ve heard a rumor that the original theatrical cuts of the original ‘Star Wars‘ trilogy were coming to Blu-Ray but it might be the most credible one to date! As this is the 20th anniversary of the special edition releases of the trilogy and 40th anniversary of the entire franchise it seems like a good time to bring back the originals. For those unfamiliar with the story, Fox owns the distribution rights to ‘Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope’ and neither LucasFilm or now Disney have wanted to pay them per each copy sold so we haven’t seen a newer version of the film.

However, that all seems to be changing with this new rumor that has us all a little excited.

“Several sources” have told Making Star Wars that the original theatrical cuts were going to be re-released later this year in multiple formats and the website “firmly believes” that this will be happening sooner than later. The reason that this is the most solid hint of it happening to date is that Making Star Wars tends to be right when they release early information on the franchise.

They do stress that this is only a rumor at this time, but as this is one piece of hearsay which has come up quite a few times in the past few years. With Disney behind the franchise now, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see it happen. Still, Making Star Wars is right more than they are wrong so there could be some great news in store for us later this year!

Do you think that we’re finally going to have a shot at getting the original trilogy on Blu-Ray or is this another rumor that won’t prove to be true? Share your thoughts below!
