In the latest clip from ‘Doctor Strange’, Mads Mikkelsen‘s villain Kaecilius and two of his zealots storm the Sanctum Sanctorium in this new promo from the movie.  As we’ve seen in previous clips, Strange’s home appears to have been heavily influenced by the trippy art of M.C. Escher, with shifting perspectives and warped reality.  While the zealots appear well versed in magic, as you can see in the clip, Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is obviously still learning.  This leads to some moments of that trademark Marvel Studios humor, mixed with some pretty impressive action and eye-catching special effects.

Some were puzzled that director Scott Derrickson chose Kaecilius as the villain for the film, as he’s a rather minor character in the comics (and the lackey for a more famous foe, at that).  Perhaps more obvious choices would have been Marvel’s version of Satan, Mephisto, Nightmare or Strange’s most famous adversary Dormammu.

But Derrickson explained his decision, saying:

“I became very interested in Kaecilius’s point of view and what makes him tick because, in the end, the villains that I have loved in movies, it all comes back to their ideology, what’s their philosophy.  What we do have is a villain who has a very cogent point of view. He’s a man of ideas, and the way he thinks and what he is motivated by has some merit, and it pushes the movie into some moral ambiguities, into some moral questions, that I think is really interesting.  Loki becomes iconic through Thor 2 and through The Avengers. He’s very good in the first Thor movie, but I don’t think that in movie as itself he would have been remembered as an iconic villain.”

So it would appear that Derrickson has plans for Kaecilius beyond this one film!  It remains to be seen if fans are left clamoring for more, once the film is released in two weeks.
