Ever since Netflix first announced their plans to create a run of live action television series based on Marvel Comics’ street level heroes, people have been excited. It should go without saying that when Netflix revealed that these shows would eventually culminate in an ‘Avengers’ type team up series dubbed ‘The Defenders’, fans were elated. But with the different direction that each of these series has had so far (and we’ve had three out of four series so far), people have been playing a lot of guessing games as to what ‘The Defenders‘ will actually be about. What could possibly bring a team of heroes that are this different together? What evil force will cause them to unite for the greater good? This weekend at New York Comic Con 2016, Marvel announced that this villainous force would be none other than the legendary Sigourney Weaver.
During their Marvel Netflix panel at New York Comic-Con 2016, producer Jeph Loeb brought out our prospective team of ‘Defenders’ to the main stage of The Javits Center! On stage, we had Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Finn Jones (Iron Fist), brought together in public for the first time as the full team of ‘Defenders’ for the masses to see! Once they are all on stage, Loeb goes on to say that “We have not yet told you who the villain of ‘The Defenders’ is, and the reason for that is that we needed to find somebody that could take on all of these guys! She doesn’t require any introduction, anywhere she goes in the world, and she will be joining ‘The Defenders’ cast. Ladies and gentlemen, it is my distinct pleasure to introduce Ms. Sigourney Weaver!”. Before Loeb can even finish saying her name into the microphone, the crowd erupts into what can only be described as a roaring ocean of cheers while Sigourney takes the stage to help close out the panel.
Sigourney Weaver is no stranger to the action or science fiction genre, with best known for her work on film series like ‘ALIEN’, ‘Ghostbusters’, and ‘Avatar’. It hasn’t yet been revealed just who Sigourney will be playing, but rumors have been running heavily that she will be taking on the gender bent role of Mephisto, lord of the underworld. With all of the magical and mystical elements joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Mephisto entering the mix, and with a high-profile actress like Sigourney Weaver potentially in the role, Marvel’s ‘The Defenders’ are certainly going to have their hands full!
