The second season of ‘Lucifer‘ is bringing in a fan favorite as Tricia Helfer (‘Battlestar Galactica’,’Powers‘) is joining the cast as Lucifer’s mom. The Mother of Darkness was teased in the finale of the first season and now she’ll be showing up as the mother for Tom Ellis’s take on The Devil alongside  D.B. Woodside who plays Amenadiel. It makes sense in a way as showrunner Joe Henderson said that the first season “was the story of a wayward son dealing with his father issues, Season 2 is Mom.”

Yes, parents are always a fun trope to go with and it takes on a whole new level when it comes to parents being angels. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine a better actress to give Lucifer a run for his money.

Helfer’s character will be named Charlotte and her character is described as:

Trapped in Hell for thousands of years by God (her ex-husband), the Mother of Angels is now free on Earth. Once reunited with Lucifer, it will become clear that she’s the one he takes after. Mom is fearless and has a strong conviction for who she is and what she deserves. However, mother and son do not share the same opinion when it comes to humanity. Everything that fascinates Lucifer about people repels Mom — a disdain that’s highlighted by that fact that Mom’s trapped in a human body for her stay on Earth. Lucifer’s desperate to find out what Mom’s up to, but she claims that all she wants is to spend time with her sons again. But can the devil’s mom really be that innocent?

When talking about the character, Henderson says that Charlotte “is eternal to a certain extent” which is what allowed him to cast an actress so close to Ellis’s age:

“In the comics and common mythology, it’s really not something that’s been established, so this is us doing a little world building. This is us taking a step and exploring the answer to a question a lot of people never asked and staking our own claim. There are a lot of directions we can go and we’ve chosen one that we’re really excited about.”

I’m always a fan of Tricia Helfer being involved in genre work and the idea of her being the mother of The Devil has me wondering at all the entertaining ways she’ll be putting Lucifer in his place.
