The ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special has become something of a tradition and this year’s promises to be quite a fun romp, marked by the return of Alex Kingston as The Doctor’s time-tossed wife River Song who needs his help with… why her NEW husband who bears a resemblance to a live action version of Baymax from ‘Big Hero 6‘ with a detachable human head!

After this particularly tragic season, it should be fun to see The Doctor cut loose and have a light-hearted adventure, with no dire consequences.

Here is the synopsis for this year’s special entitled “The Husbands of River Song.”

It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy. King Hydroflax (Greg Davies) is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole (Matt Lucas) survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is?

All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time.

The BBC has released TWO new trailers for the episode, which you can watch below:

Where there’s a River, there’s a romp! The Doctor and his wife team-up for Christmas!

One fellow who may not be tuning in is the Doctor that actually married River, Matt Smith, who commented:

“I’m really possessive over Alex .  I said this to Steven [Moffat]. I was like, ‘Listen, just don’t! Just not Alex. Anyone else, but don’t give [Capaldi] River… I am really proud of the fact that Alex was part of number Eleven’s life. My wife!”

Showrunner Steven Moffat joked:

“I’m quite happy that [the former Doctors] are all a bit sulky. I think David was a bit hacked off, actually. Because – and this actually happened – Russell T Davies and David bumped into Alex in the Hollywood Bowl and David said, ‘Did I hear that you’re back in Doctor Who?’ and she said, ‘Yes I am.’ And then David asked ‘What’s happening?’ And she just went, ‘Spoilers!’ She actually said it. In real life!

“The Husbands of River Song” premiers on Christmas day on BBCOne in the UK and BBC America in the US.
