It is an understatement to say that the ‘Fantastic Four‘ reboot wasn’t well received but Fox still had hopes for ‘Fantastic Four 2’ and the film was still on the studio’s release schedule… that is until yesterday.
Had Fox not used the First Family of Marvel, rights to the characters would have reverted back to Marvel Studios. The studio clearly was hoping this franchise would become the kind of cash cow that the ‘X-Men’ franchise has been for them but that line of thinking might finally be coming to an end as Twentieth Century Fox no longer has the sequel listed with a release date.
Interestingly enough, it isn’t even the ‘Fantastic Four’ that Marvel seems to care about bringing back into the fold but the heroes long list of cosmic villains and quite possibly Doctor Doom that they’d like to have access to. In 2012, when Fox was about to lose the rights to ‘Daredevil‘, Marvel Studios attempted to extend them in exchange for being able to use the Silver Surfer and Galactus. Viewers are thankful as we’ve instead gotten quite an amazingly gritty Netflix series but with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and the upcoming Infinity movies showing that space has a big future for the company, it would benefit them greatly to have an increased access to the cosmic properties that they’ve created.
So does this mean that Fox has given up on ‘Fantastic Four’? This could have just been a move as to see the film not go up against the ‘World War Z‘ sequel which would have crushed it to begin with. So we could just be seeing a juggling of release dates away from the originally planned June 9th, 2017 and a new one has yet to be decided upon. That being said, the film would have to go up against some real bombs in order to get any traction at the box office with how badly the reboot did.
Of course with how successful the cosmic end of things have been, it could be quite likely that while Marvel would love to see the Shi’ar Empire, Skrulls, Badoon, Doctor Doom, bracas, Annihilus, Silver Surfer, and Galactus added to their playing field that Fox would like to see the X-Men go up against them too. There would be a solid reason for having at least the Shi’ar Empire and Skrulls for our mutants to fight on a space adventure.
Do you believe that Fox is going to be letting Marvel have the rights to their characters back or are we still in for another sequel or reboot of the ‘Fantastic Four’?
