Whovians have grappled with one seeming dangling plot thread for six years now– What ever happened to Jenny, a.k.a. ‘The Doctor’s Daughter’ who as introduced, and then bid farewell to, in the episode of the same name.  She was played by Georgia Moffatt, a real life Doctor’s Daughter, being the child of Peter Davidson who played The Doctor in the early 80s.  At the end of the episode, Jenny blasted off into space and was never heard from again.  So what happened to her?

Though he didn’t interact with her– Jenny appeared during David Tennant’s run– Peter Capaldi addressed the question of whether or not The Doctor remembered her.  “The Doctor never forgets about anyone,” he said while appearing at The Doctor Who Festival.  “But there are a lot people – a lot of time and space – and he hasn’t got time to deal with everyone at every moment of the day. No, he hasn’t forgotten about her.”

But since Capaldi only plays the Doctor and doesn’t really contribute to the story evolution, he can’t really determine one way or another whether if Jenny will ever return on the show.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like she will be popping back up any time soon.  But showrunner Steven Moffat offered fans a possible explanation of what became of her after her debut.

“I’ve got Russell T Davies’ answer. Apparently it was me that kept her alive, because I said – when I heard about the idea – ‘Oh don’t kill her at the end, that’s the Star Trek thing to do.’ So he kept her alive just because I said that. And I wrote to him after and said, ‘well I didn’t know that I did that,’ and he said, ‘oh it doesn’t matter, Steven, she flew straight into a moon!”

So while The Doctor may be unaware, Jenny didn’t go on to further adventures.  She died right after their encounter.  He and the audience just didn’t see it.

Is this canon?  Will the Doctor’s Daughter actually return unscathed in the future?

It’s certainly possible, but it doesn’t sound like the powers that be are in any real rush to revisit her character.

What do you think?  Are you satisfied with Davies-by-way-of-Steven Moffat’s explanation?  Or are you a fan, hoping she will one day return to come face-to-face with a new Doctor?
