Black Lightning

‘Black Lightning’ isn’t part of the Arrowverse, but that doesn’t mean that the series will be short on DC characters.  Obviously, the show centers on Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce, a.k.a. Black Lightning.  Nafessa Williams and China Anne McClane play his daughters Anissa and Jennifer, a.k.a. Thunder and Lightning.  The show has also incorporated Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy), although this version doesn’t (yet) have superpowers.

It was previously revealed that Doctor Helga Jace, a supporting character from the ‘Batman and the Outsiders’ and ‘The Outsiders’ comic books, will be joining the series.  Now, ‘Black Lightning’ is looking to add Looker to its ranks.  The series is casting a female Caucasian actor in her early 20s, whose role will be a “major recurring guest star.”  She is further described as a “youthful looking woman with a soul that has lived for a long time, whose eyes are ethereal and whose look is penetrating.”

In the comics, Looker was Emily “Lia” Briggs, a mousy librarian who discovered that she was descended from a race of subterranean beings and developed telepathy and telekinesis, which she channeled through her eyes and transformed from a dowdy wallflower into a voluptuous vixen.  Yes, being hot is actually one of her superpowers.  In later comics, she became a vampire, which may explain the description that she has a “soul that has lived for a long time.”

As for Doctor Jace, she was a kindly ally to the Outsiders for years and was responsible for giving their ersatz leader Geo-Force his powers.  But in the ‘Millennium’ crossover, she was revealed as a sleeper agent sent by the evil androids the Manhunters.  Her betrayal robbed Looker of her powers (including her hotness), placed Halo into a coma and seemingly killed Metamorpho. (Don’t worry; it’s comics.  They all recovered.)

Two other new characters are also being added, but they don’t appear to be based on comic book characters.  Janga is described as “an African-American male in his late 20s who is both bad-ass and strong fighter.”  That’s not a lot to go by, so he could turn out to be someone from the comics once he actually appears.  Thierry, “an African-American male in his late 50s. Thierry is seen as a daunting leader as well as a dad who is sweet and powerful. Not only is he in great physical shape, Thierry also has a piercing stare.”  Thierry is deaf and the producers are seeking an actual deaf or hearing impaired actor fluent in ASL to portray him.

‘Black Lightning’ returns to The CW on Tuesday, October 9th, 2018 at 9pm EST, after ‘The Flash’.
