During last night’s episode of ‘The Walking Dead,’ AMC launched the world premiere of the trailer for the highly anticipated upcoming series, ‘Preacher.’

The series is based on the twisted and popular ‘90s comic book franchise of the same name which was created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and follows the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) embark on a journey to, literally, find God.

You can check out the trailer below:

This isn’t the first time a ‘Preacher’ adaptation has been attempted. Years ago, HBO was working to bring the comic to the small screen with Mark Steven Johnson and Howard Deutch as producers. After a couple years of being in development hell, the project was scrapped with Johnson stating the new head of HBO felt the t was “just too dark and too violent and too controversial” for the network. The irony was not lost on Johnson as that was (and still is) the tone of the comics in the first place. Feature film attempts were also stalled before the project was picked up by AMC.

Oddly, the supernatural aspect of the series is not touched upon in the trailer and it will be interesting to see the direction that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin take and how closely they will follow the comic’s storylines. Rogen has stated, however, that fans of ‘Preacher’ shouldn’t expect a play by play and that the series will deviate from the comic much like television version of ‘The Walking Dead’ has deviated from its predecessor:

“Me and Evan are writing it write now with the help of Sam Catlin and we’ve come up with a lot of incredibly crazy ideas. [Laughs] It’s a fun thing to riff on and talk about. We’re definitely trying to expand on some of the ideas in the comic and make it that…we love most of the main cornerstones of the comic but we’re trying to make it that even if you’ve read the comic you should not know exactly what to expect from the TV show.”

At the moment, no definite release date has been announced by AMC for ‘Preacher,’ but it is slated to premiere sometime in mid-2016 – just enough time to stock up on the holy water!
