Gal Gadot will debut as Wonder Woman in next year’s ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’, but you already knew that.  You also know that she will then be spinning off into a solo movie due in 2017, directed by Patty Jenkins and also starring Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.  What you don’t know, nor does anyone else not directly involved in developing this movies, is WHEN the movie takes place.

Rumors have abounded that it would take place in the past.  One reported that it would be set during the Crimean War and the rumor that the film was using the alias ‘Nightingale’ supports that, because that was the era when Florence Nightingale established modern nursing.  Wonder Woman, as Diana Prince, served as a war nurse in her early comics, so that may make sense.

But a second rumor was that the story would be set during World War I.  This would be unique in that Wonder Woman was created at the dawn of World War II.  Not only were her earliest comic book stories set in this time, but the first season of the popular 70s TV show, starring Lynda Carter was also set during that time.  But World War I?  Wonder Woman has no ties to that conflict or time period.  What could the movie be about if it were set then?

We may find out.  The latest word is that the Crimean War setting is out and that the movie, or at least part of it, will indeed be set during WWI.  This brings something completely new to the table, so it could be interesting to see how that plays out.

But that’s not where the story ends.  The next bit of news should be a no-brainer: the movie will be split between the past and the present.  Or at least contemporary times.  Part of the story, most likely the second half, will be set sometime around the events in ‘Batman V Superman’, possibly before, possibly after.

Okay, so not earth-shattering, but at least there’s some clarity.  Well, maybe.  It’s still a rumor, either way.  But the idea of doing the film as strictly a period piece always seemed odd, so at least it appears that some (if not most) of the action will be set in the present and feature flashbacks.
