Hot on the heels of several pieces of casting information comes the first official look Deadpool’s costume from the upcoming movie. The costume and full image seen below, was revealed on Twitter by ‘Deadpool’ star Ryan Reynolds himself.
Notably, the costume is very similar to the version that was used for the proof of concept sizzle reel that director Tim Miller released online last year and which seems to have provided this long dormant project (to which Reynolds has long been attached) with the momentum it needed. That iteration was of the anti-hero was done in CGI, but nonetheless provided a hint of the direction the film would ultimately take.
But perhaps more significant to fans is the fact that this costume is strikingly similar to its comic book counterpart. As ‘Deadpool’ is expected to be a part of Fox’s larger universe of X-Men films, this is particularly remarkable given that the first of those films very famously broke with the comic’s aesthetic, choosing black leather over colorful spandex. Indeed, the closest that the silver screen X-Men have ever come to dressing like their four color predecessors was 2011’s ‘X-Men: First Class,’ which featured a riff on the classic blue and gold X-Men costumes.
From the official synopsis:
Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, ‘Deadpool’ tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade WIlson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Deadpool was created by artist Rob Liefeld for a 1991 issue of ‘New Mutants.’ The Merc with a Mouth continued to grow in popularity, earning his first ongoing series in 1997. He has starred in at least one monthly comic ever since.
Set for release on February 12, 2016, ‘Deadpool’ stars Ryan Reynolds, Gina Carano, T. J. Miller, Ed Skrein and Morena Baccarin.
