After years of diminishing returns, the Terminator franchise is taking some bold steps to revitalize itself with its next installment, the upcoming ‘Terminator Genisys.’

To a greater extent than any previous Terminator film, ‘Genisys’ truly seems to be embracing the element of time travel that has permeated the series from the start. Though details about the film’s story remain scarce, trailers and public statements that have been released thus far make it clear that ‘Terminator Genisys’ is radically altering the series’ established timeline. Several scenes in the trailer (which is included below) make it clear that the story of this film intersects with that of the original ‘Terminator,’ going as far as to attempt to put a new spin on iconic scenes. In some cases this “new spin” calls for the older Schwarzenegger we know today to square off against his counterpart from 1984.

Returning star Arnold Schwarzenegger was present at the recent Arnold Classic and Sports Festival, where he took some time to discuss the film. In the course of these remarks, addresses the process of recreating scenes from the original ‘Terminator,’ such as those described above. He also takes a moment to tease several elements of the plot, including the identity of the villain and a number of details about his aging terminator.

From the man himself:

“I got myself in shape and felt great, the way I looked in the movie. I think it’s going to be a great movie with great surprises, none of which you can see in the trailer, simply because of the visual FX… to recreate me from 1984, every single frame has to be recreated… and it’s quite a long scene. The idea is in 1984 when you see me walking across naked to those punks and say “Give me your clothes.”

Now the scene changes. As I (the young Arnold) say “Give me your clothes,” suddenly you hear a voice behind me say “You won’t need them.” So the Terminator turns around to check out who is that, and all of a sudden he sees himself, which is me the way I look now, and I’m there with a shotgun, and I just blast away at him. We’ll be having some great surprises about who is the ultimate villain that I have to fight, how I was reprogramed, and the time travel. You can’t travel through time when you have metal exposed, and my arm gets deteriorated… the flesh, because of some acid… so then my metal arm is exposed, therefore I cannot use the time machine.”

In addition to Arnold Schwarzenegger , ‘Terminator: Genisys’ stars Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese and Jason Clarke as John Connor. The film also features former ‘Doctor Who’ star Matt Smith in an as yet vaguely defined part. The film will be in theaters on July 1st.
