Based on the pictures alone, Marvel made the right choice in casting Vincent D’Onofrio as the gangster supervillain known as Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin. After shaving his head and adding 30 pounds to his 150 pound 6 ft 3 inch frame, he definitely looks the part. And according to sources, D’Onofrio is bring a lot to the character’s personality as well, adding new layers not seen before in the comics or in the original ‘Daredevil’ film. In his words:

“I just brought in this kind of character who in one sentence could easily go from being a child to a monster, depending on where his emotions take him…I wanted him to have an appearance of being super-powerful so that when he throws a punch, it’s a major punch. There’s a lot of weight behind it.”

It seems that the show will be as much an origin story for Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox), as it will be for his antagonist, the powerful Kingpin. While Fisk may already be the powerhouse villain at the start of the series whose name criminals are afraid to speak, it seems he is still a bit insecure, which becomes fully evident when he meets the lovely Vanessa Marianna (Ayelet Zurer), an arts dealer who comic fans know will eventually become his wife. Does this mean part of ‘Daredevil’ will be a love-story between the gangster and his future bride? Might add some interesting layers to the show.

Daredevil‘ seems to be full of potential, and I cannot wait to see how the first joint venture of Marvel and Netflix fares when it is released on April 10th, 2015. Here’s hoping it lives up to all of it’s promise. For anyone not in the know, the official series description is below:

Marvel’s Daredevil” is a live action series that follows the journey of attorney Matt Murdock, who in a tragic accident was blinded as a boy but imbued with extraordinary senses. Murdock sets up practice in his old neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, New York where he now fights against injustice as a respected lawyer by day and masked vigilante at night.
