The next installment of the ‘Tomb Raider’ franchise is being developed by not just Crystal Dynamics for the Xbox One, but also by Nixxes Software for the Xbox 360, says one of Square Enix’s heads Darrell Gallagher in the March issue of Game Informer.

Despite his claims that they want to focus on ‘Rise’ as an Xbox One title, Gallagher says, “There are millions of players out there who have an Xbox 360 and those console translations take time. So we did a test. Nixxes put together a tech demo of ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ content running on Xbox 360, and we were totally blown away by what they achieved. But the existence of that game isn’t limiting our work on the Xbox One version.”

Nixxes has worked on ‘Tomb Raider’ games in the past so the handoff is not surprising.

There have been discussions about whether releasing new games on both current and past gen consoles is a smart move; Marcin Iwinski, CEO of CD Projekt, said about their upcoming game ‘The Witcher 3‘ to Edge, “there’s just no way that it would run on current-gen. We’d have to put a couple of years of development into [360 and PS3 versions], and then the experience would be so-so… we’d never do that.”
