About two months ago, it was announced that ‘Inglorious Basterds’, ‘Rush’, and ‘The Fifth Estate’ star Daniel Bruhl would be joining Frank Grillo’s Crossbones (and Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, depending on who you talk to) as one of the villains in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ At the time though, the character that actor would be playing was still a mystery. But now thanks to a casting call from Disney and Marvel Studios, we now know that he’ll be portraying a classic Marvel villain with a long, storied history with the Star-Spangled Avenger.

According to Movie Casting Call, the actor known for his role as the German sharpshooter turned movie star in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 war film has been revealed as Baron Zemo in the Russo brothers’ upcoming Phase Three film. However, there are two characters in the Marvel Universe with that name and there’s no word on whether Bruhl will be the original World War II era Heinrich Zemo or his son Helmut Zemo, the one time leader of the reformed villains known as the Thunderbolts and the regular villains the Masters of Evil.

If I were to make a guess, I’d think that we would see Bruhl playing Helmut in the film as the leader of the Thunderbolts. The team played a part in the ‘Civil War’ comic series and they could easily fit in with the cinematic universe version of the story. Superpowered beings that don’t register with the Superhuman Registration Act will likely need to be policed by someone in the eyes of Iron Man and the government, so who better than “reformed” villains that the heroes put away? Maybe we’ll even see some rogues that we’ve even seen before in other Marvel films or on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ as well. And at the same time, I could see Zemo on a secret mission of revenge on Cap in the name of his father. There are definitely some interesting possibilities that could play out in Steve Rogers’ third solo film, but we’re likely to learn which path the Russos decide to take sooner rather than later since filming is set to begin this April in Los Angeles and Atlanta.
