In the DC Comics Universe, the Suicide Squad is a loose configuration of super villains tasked with carrying out government missions (usually involving assassination) in exchange for their prison sentences being cut short.  The roster fluctuates but has included Deadshot, Harley Quinn and King Shark among many others and is led by Amanda Waller.  The team was recently brought together on The CW’s ‘Arrow’ and was comprised of Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), Bronze Tiger (Michael Jai White), Deadshot (Michael Rowe) and Shrapnel (Sean Maher) (who died trying to escape during their mission).

Now it looks as if Warner Brothers/DC Comics wants to bring this gathering of inmates to the big screen.  It’s no secret that WB is aggressively looking to promote the DC brand as a movie franchise which kicked off with last year’s ‘Man of Steel’ and will build with next year’s ‘Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice‘, which will introduce a new Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher).

But WB is looking ahead to tap into other DC properties to bring to the big screen and the Suicide Squad would bring a darker edge to their cinematic universe.  Then again, Sony is going dark with their planned ‘Venom’ and ‘Sinister Six’ movies, so maybe audiences are ready for darker comic book movies.

Though there are many DC movies rumored to be in development, it appears this one is closer to a sure deal, as it’s rumored that WB is courting David Ayers, who helmed the Brad Pitt WWII movie ‘Fury’ to actually take the reigns of ‘Suicide Squad’.  Ayers also penned the script to the fan-favorite film ‘Training Day’, which also had a dark edge.  Reportedly, this movie is slated to hit before 2020.  It’s also rumored that WB wants to release some lower budget movies based on DC properties, so this could be their best shot, since many of the characters that have been used in this comic series didn’t actually have super powers.  A more basic war/heist movie could give a slight alternative to the usual splashy super hero movies.

What do you think?  Do you want to see a ‘Suicide Squad’ movie?  What characters should be included?
