Move over Marvel, there’s a new superhero team in town, and it’s not the Justice League. (Well sort of.) It’s also not going to be on the big screen, but rather the smaller, but still bigger than ever screen found in living rooms across the country. I’m talking about the cast of ‘Arrow,’ and the recent revelations from Brandon Routh (‘Superman Returns‘) about the possibilities of his new character, Ray Palmer, officially becoming “The Atom” during his stint on ‘Arrow’ this season.

Which would mean that this season ‘Arrow’ would have a heroic ensemble that includes The Green Arrow, Speedy, The Black Canary, Arsenal and The Atom, not to mention any crossover with The Flash (who premieres this fall with his own CW show, in case you’ve been living under a rock the past few months).

Though the producers have not confirmed any storylines involving Ray Palmer’s transformation into the Atom, they have shown Routh some of their ideas regarding the costume. He shared some of what he saw below:

“It’s a totally different suit and I haven’t been in it yet, I’ve only seen some drawings. It’s a very different character and I really can’t say too much about what the suit’s going to look like. Just that it’s very different and I don’t believe there’s a cape, which doesn’t really surprise anybody if you’ve seen The Atom in the comics.”

As to all the mystery surrounding Ray Palmer’s storyline this season, Routh had the following to say:

“They’re kind of waiting. Making it dramatic, I suppose. I’m not sure of the end date… we’ve filmed six episodes so far, six of twenty-two, so there’s a long way to go yet.”

For Routh, the opportunity to re-enter the DC Universe is a welcome one, as it was not that long ago that he donned the tights and cape of the man of steel in Brian Singer’s ‘Superman Returns.’ While not one of my favorite comic-book movies, I felt the movie suffered more from Singer’s excesses, and that in another director’s hands Routh would have made a perfect Superman.

Putting aside his past history with DC, Routh sounds very excited to be on a hit show like ‘Arrow,’ and about the part Ray Palmer will play in this season’s storylines.

“It’s a cool opportunity; it’s a cool show with a huge following. They do a great job grounding the show. Having my character on there… he has a lot of different elements. I get to come on there and [do some] comedy in a pretty dark world. My character interacts with Felicity mostly in the episodes I’ve shot so far and it’s just a lot of fun…I have a great time working with Emily. I think it’s going to add a whole new element to the show that I think audiences will like, whether they dislike Ray getting into the middle of the Oliver/Felicity relationship or not.”

The potential for yet another suitor to distract Felicity this season and prolong the will they/ won’t they storyline of her and Oliver may not sound overly exciting, but the prospect of having a classic hero like the Atom on ‘Arrow’ more than makes up for any extension of the Oliver/Felicity drama.
