While zombies might be hot right now, director Eli Roth (‘Cabin Fever’ ,’Hostel’) has decided to go with another variety of flesh eater in the first trailer for his next film, ‘The Green Inferno’.

In this one we’re getting some actual human on human action when we find quite the group of cannibals who would put ‘Hannibal‘ to shame. As with anything Roth likes to do, we’re going to be going a little over the top. This group of cannibals don’t have quite the refined civilized nature or palette that everyone’s favorite television cannibal currently has.

While the film isn’t exactly a remake of the 1988 ‘Natura Contro’ (which also went by the titles ‘The Green Inferno’ and ‘Cannibal Holocaust II’), it is clearly inspired by it. One look at this footage and you can clearly tell if this film isn’t for you if you have a weak stomach. (Which is pretty standard for some of Roth’s previous work.)

Being a long time lover of cannibal films and over the top horror, it’s almost a wonder that Roth hasn’t done a film like this sooner. The plot? Loosely based off of the activism seen quite frequently during ‘Occupy Wall Street’ and ‘Save the Dolphins’ campaigns, the film centers on a group that wants to take up a cause to save a tribe in the Amazon. Only when their plane goes down does the tribe find them and the only saving they want from the survivors is to be saved from their hunger, for human flesh.

Check out the trailer below followed by the film’s synopsis:

A group of student activists travel from New York City to the Amazon to save a dying tribe but crash in the jungle and are taken hostage by the very natives they protected.

What do you think of the first trailer for ‘The Green Inferno’? Does Roth have a hit on his hands or will he once again be giving us an over the top film that will leave many either wanting on plot or disgusted with unnecessary gore and violence meant to shock instead of entertain?
