One role that many thought could be fun to see Arnold Schwarzenegger return to was Conan the Barbarian in ‘The Legend of Conan‘ as an older Conan was previously teased, but it looks like that is one movie we’ll never be able to see. After years of Schwarzenegger promising that Conan would be back, it sounds like this is a sequel which isn’t going to make it to the big screen.

Chris Morgan was working on a script that would allow for the original franchise to continue and pretend that ‘Conan the Destroyer’ had never existed, but it seems like things haven’t worked out too well there. While being interviewed for his upcoming film, ‘The Fate of the Furious’ the script for ‘The Legend of Conan’ was brought up and that is where the bad news kicked in. When asked if there was an update, Morgan responded:

“Not so much. That’s kind of a longer story. At the end of the day, the studio decided that they weren’t gonna make that. I gotta say, it’s honestly a heartbreak. I love that first movie so much, so much, it’s one of my favorite movies. We had Will Beall do a draft on [the Legend of Conan script]. He killed it. Our take was Conan, 30 years later, a story like the Clint Eastwood Unforgiven. It was so awesome. Ultimately, the budget was big, the studio was not really sure of the title, and the relevance in the marketplace. They ended up letting it go. I think they’re gonna look to do a TV show or something with it. But just to be associated with it, pitch it to Arnold, have him get so excited, there was a moment of magic for me, personally [laughs]. You never know, down the road we may revisit!”

Apparently, the studio wasn’t paying attention to how well ‘Logan’ did on a similar premise. Sure, the X-Men are a little more favorable at the box office then a Barbarian who hasn’t been on screen for ages but with the right story and budget this could have not only been the perfect endcap to the originals but might have been poised to kick off an entirely new franchise.
