Poor Benedict Cumberbatch (‘Star Trek Into Darkness‘,’The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘) just can’t catch a break when it comes to the next ‘Star Wars’ film. When rumors initially spread that he would be joining the cast he quickly shot them down (first I might add) by saying that “nobody has been cast and there are no offers out to anyone apart from the regulars who are returning. So that’s that rumor quashed”. Of course just as quickly as he denied it they popped right back up.

So now he was asked again in a recent interview. First he commented on whether he would ever appear on the series ‘Doctor Who’ or play the Doctor:

“I’m never gonna play the Doctor – and nothing to do with the Whoniverse.”

He then added:

“I would’ve liked a part in JJ’s new Star Wars but it won’t happen, sadly.”

While for most actors making usch a statement would put the ‘Star Wars’ castin rumor to bed, this is Benedict Cumberbatch we’re talking about and it is also a film by J.J. Abrams. You know, the role that they lied about him playing another character for months upon months before the film’s release? Sure in retrospect Abrams claims to regret keeping it a secret. Regret or not this is the man who surrounded a shooting location with walls of shipping containers to keep prying eyes out.

I’m not sure if that is a man we can really trust on what he is saying about a movie in advance.

Will he in fact be joining the cast of the next ‘Star Wars’ or will he be hanging out with the also not cast Billy Dee Williams at a dive bar? I’m honestly not sure but I have to say whatever dive bar these pair would be hanging out is a place I’d probably want to hang out at! All of that being said, with official casting announcements due out soon I suspect this time he might just be telling the truth.

What do you think? Will Cumberbatch be joining a cast in a galaxy far far away or are rumors all these ever were?
