Back when the first bits of news were emerging about ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2, fans were intrigued by the inclusion of Electro as the main villain, but as a whole the fan base was optimistic since Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx was stepping into the role. Then news got out that Paul Giamatti was added to the film as Rhino, who is a villain that Spidey fans probably weren’t expecting to see the movie version of the web-slinger tango with. Finally, it was announced that the Green Goblin would also be making an appearance in the film and that’s when fans started getting uneasy flashbacks to Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 3’, which was widely panned by audiences and critics alike due in part to the overload of villains in the story, among other things. Well, if you’re worried about the latest incarnation of the wall-crawler being stretched too thin between adversaries, director Marc Webb is here to ease your mind.

This past weekend at South By Southwest following his keynote speech, Webb spoke about the bad guy issue that has some fans concerned that we might see emo Peter Parker again. He assures us that his upcoming film won’t walk those lines again:

“We’re obviously familiar with the complaints people had. We’re very careful to make sure the stories intertwine. For Peter Parker, it’s very important that you create obstacles that are difficult to overcome.”

He then goes on to say that Giamatti’s Rhino is only “in the movie for four minutes”. My guess is that those four minutes, some of which we’ve already seen in trailers and photos, will introduce the Russian gangster turned horned baddie into their cinematic universe so that he could be brought back later in one of the Spider-Man sequels or spinoffs.

Basically, we shouldn’t be worried about there being too many villains in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. So now that this issue has been put to sleep, are there any other issues that you could see arising from Sony’s Spidey sequel? Are there any more potential plot points that could prove problematic for you, like maybe the iconic death of a certain character? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
