Earlier this month, Rian Johnson got the hopes up for those who didn’t enjoy ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘ by commenting that his planned trilogy might not be happening. Now, the director has clarified that statement. To those who were excited, it is “as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.” Yes, Johnson’s trilogy is still happening, folks.

At the time, Johnson mentioned that Lucasfilm was still “figuring out what they’re doing” with “Star Wars” and that he would “be thrilled if it happens.”

In a recent interview Johnson was asked about the comment where he went on to say:

“Did I say ‘if’? Oh god. I have no update at all. But I’m still working with Lucasfilm on it, and they’re figuring out when they do what and everything.”

While there is no update on when it will happen, this does indicate that Johnson and Lucasfilm are still in pre-development stages and that it has in no way been canceled. While I do hope we don’t get another installment of the slowest space chase ever to occur or side trips to a casino planet that have no actual need to have happened, I think the rest of his addition to the franchise was welcome, and I’m eager to see what he has planned. As Johnson’s trilogy won’t have any impact on the “Skywalker Saga” and will take place in a different era and location of the “Star Wars” universe, it should be fun to see what he can give us when not continuing someone else’s story.

Johnson had previously shared his views on taking risks in his film. With a highly divided fanbase, it is hard to tell if these risks have paid off.

Are you glad that Rian Johnson is still able to work on his “Star Wars” trilogy, or did a piece of you just die inside with this news? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
